Colored Pencil Drawing wins National Silver Medal in Scholastic Art and Writing 2018
Columbus East High School junior Mckenzie Brown won a Gold Key in Drawing and Illustration for her colored pencil drawing, “Sylvester’s Sly Smile”. Mckenzie was recently honored at Clowes Hall at Butler University, with Gold Key winners were automatically judged again for Scholastic’s National Medals in New York City.
Mckenzie was notified in late March of her National Silver Medal win. Mckenzie’s drawing is nationally in the top 1% of student art work in the Scholastic Awards. Although only National Gold Medalists will be invited to the participate in the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall this spring, National Silver medalists will be recognized at the awards ceremony in New York City with a video presentation.
Students across the country submitted nearly 350,000 works of art and writing to the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Nationally, about 19,600 art works earned Gold Keys, and advanced to national judging in New York City. Of all the Gold Key works, just 3,259 received National Gold or Silver Medals.

Ceramic Work Earns a Spot in Scholastic Traveling Art Tour
Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention Scholastic winner Mark Nusterer’s ceramic vase, “Ice Flow” has been selected as part of a year-long traveling Central and Southern Indiana Student Regional Art Tour. Mark is a Columbus East High School junior, and works primarily in 3D Art with the potter’s wheel. Mark won 1 Gold Key, 2 Silver Keys and 2 Honorable Mentions recently at the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards at Clowes Hall at Butler University.
The Regional Art Tour is produced and presented by Clowes Memorial Hall of the Butler Arts Center and The Hoosier Writing Project at IUPUI, and showcases a selection of award-winning works from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2018. Among the future locations the student art will be displayed, for approximately a one year tour, will be the Indianapolis Art Center, Indianapolis Arts Garden and Cultural Arts Center at IUPUI.
